Graphic Novels ~ Early Readers

Avery and the Fairy Circle
Created by Rowan Kingsbury
Published by Flying Eye
With its gentle pastel colour palette, charming fairytale illustrations and a fun-filled adventure, Avery’s story offers a wonderful introduction not only to graphic novels but also to independent reading. Plus, for anyone who likes their books to have that little extra, this one has a lovely dark pink sprayed edge, suiting it perfectly.
Avery and her family are moving into their new home, she can’t wait to explore, assuring her parents she'll stay in sight of the house and stay safe. What she really wants to do is collect plants and meet some of the local wildlife, insects too. When she stumbles into a toadstool ring she's transported into a tiny fairy world, a world most humans never see and now she is no bigger than a mouse the forest is BIG! Luckily she has a fairy friend and if the pair of them can complete their tasks she should be able to get home before anyone worries. Magical, sweet and a wonderful invitation to share in nature.

Blue, Barry & Pancakes.
Created by Dan & Jason
Published by Rock the Boat
Remember to put the comma in the right place with this title otherwise you might miss one of the characters or, and this could be worse, you might turn one blue! Now that could be a disaster though I think that once you’ve indulged in this pair of stories you’ll quickly see that the three characters don’t need any help with disasters!
Blue, Barry and Pancakes are the very best of friends. I am a little envious of them too as they live in a giant tree house. The friends love to build model robots and flying rocket ships but they also have an unusual hobby. This one takes them on some intergalactic adventures and the first one is to some balloon planets. Never heard of such a thing. Don’t worry you are about to go with them. When you’ve done that it will be time for dance-offs, trophy winning and a search for the very best chocolate ice cream in the whole world. If you are very careful you might even find the Yeti in the story too…

Dog Man. For Whom the Ball Rolls
Created by Dav Pilkey
Published by Scholastic
When the creator of Captain Underpants decides to write a new series, you can guarantee it is going to be equally hilarious and full of antics. Dog Man is all of that and it is a graphic novel. Bold, bright, heavier on pictures than words this is ideal for younger readers. It will also appeal to their sense of humour!
There are fourteen chapters each with a very silly title ~ To Heck With the Planet of Cats is just one such! The content of the chapters is even sillier and as a whole they make up a book packed with riotous fun and guaranteed laughter. There are nearly whole pages filled with scenes, comic strips and everything in between. When you've reached the end make sure to try out the tips for drawing some of the characters for yourself. It's great fun! Oh, and the story? It's filled with action as good deeds are embarked upon to outdo those naughty evil doers…

Donut Squad Take Over the World!
Created by Neill Cameron
Published by David Fickling Books
A tasty dive into the world of dounts is offered up in Neill Cameron’s wonderful creation. Be warned however it may look very tempting and the full page, fully illustrated cast of dounts scattered throughout certainly look tasty, but they are most likely up to some mischief. This is your chance to meet the Squad. Are you ready?
Donuts are the best, of course the Donut Squad would believe that and would want you too as well. Maybe you do but are you ready to meet this lot? There will be jam and sprinkles, colour and chocolate, maybe even a dash of sparkle too. Now, if you still want to read then there is one more thing, something that you have to agree to. You have to obey the Donuts. They want to take over the world and they want you with them. Are you prepared for the action and tastes that lie ahead? Maybe by the end you’ll have been incredibly helpful and, shhh, even found a favourite? Highly addictive sugar rush ahead…

The Floofs Reach for the Stars
Created by Penelope O’Neill
Published by Frances Lincoln
Have you ever heard of a Floof? Maybe you've met one and haven’t yet realised it. You could have mistaken the Floof for something else. Some people think they have met a rabbit, rat or even mouse when in fact they've met a Floof. Just to be certain I recommend reading this!
The Floofs love adventure, they're, waiting for it, always ready to get stuck in. It doesn’t matter if the adventure is on this world, or further away among the stars and planets. Are you an adventurous explorer? Would you like to go with them? You are in luck, they have not one, not two but THREE whole cosmic adventures to share with you. Each one is filled with fun, new friends met and made, and (I will let you into this little secret) there is magic in there too. Colourful, eclectic fun.

Froggy. A Pond Full of Pals!
Created by Paige Walshe
Published by Flying Eye Books
Frogs, those green animals that love to jump, live in ponds and croak a lot? Have you ever seen one for yourself though? I wonder what it looked like. I wonder if it was Froggy. He is a tiny, green, slimy (only a little of that I promise) and he is ready to take on all the world. Are you ready for Froggy?
There's a big wide pond waiting to be explored and Froggy is ready. He hopes to make friends and eat as many snacks as possible on this adventure too! There is going to be a lot to discover, there might be a few things to be grumpy about and even a wizard who thinks he can outsmart Froggy. Not likely! There is a cute moment as he helps a pair of bees fall in love, a funny moment at a snail birthday party and even some pesky humans. A gentle, fun and exciting adventure in the natural world.
