[Armadillo 11.2 Summer 2009 ]

Milo Armadillo is Tallulah's new birthday present. He is sporty. He isn't musical. He is great for sharing adventures. He is definitely not pink and fluffy like the rabbit that she wanted. Can Tallulah learn to love her pink fluffy armadillo just the way he is?

When Tallulah's parents ask her what she wants for her birthday her answer is simple - a pink fluffy rabbit. Now that should be easy, shouldn't it? Neither the toyshop nor the pet shop can help but Gran comes to the rescue - she can make one! As Gran starts to knit it soon becomes clear that she hasn't got enough pink but having got in a muddle with her wool she just has to carry on. She is very pleased with the result, but will Tallulah be? Milo is not pink and fluffy and he can't quite reach the same heights as rabbits. It seems he can't play as well either but the more they share the more Milo and Tallulah bond, until her friends see him and notice he is not pink and fluffy. Milo takes matters into his own hands and Tallulah soon realises the joy of what she had.

Milo Armadillo teaches its reader that sometimes it is important to see beyond an exterior. It is not appearances that matter but the thought and feeling inside a person or thing. It is the way we bond that is important and this is what Tallulah learns. It is a difficult lesson and one that takes time but introducing it to children through this gentle and affectionate story will help it to be understood and taken on board by young children.
