One pig goes for a drive. But with a splutter and a splot the engine stops. A succession of passing pigs help repair the car and join his journey to town. With the familiar ring of a nursery rhyme, and an uncluttered structure, this story is instantly accessible to young listeners.

As a parent reading the book aloud, I appreciated how beautifully written it is. There's a pleasing rhythm, a touch of rhyme, some lovely language (I loved Sam the strongman who “heaved and hoved”) plus wonderful sound-effects for children to join in with.

Active youngsters will love the movement and noise of the shiny blue car with all its bangs, bonks and clanga langa clunks. Older children, perhaps boys especially, will enjoy the humour of the ever-increasing calamities and there is plenty of detail to investigate in the illustrations too. Great fun.
